Bank account closure and claims after death in India
Closing a deceased person's bank account is not an ordinary account closure. The bank first settles the deceased-customer claim with the nominee, surviving holder or other person entitled to claim. The exact form and document list depend on the account, how it was held and the bank.

The usual route
- Identify every bank, account and deposit, including fixed and recurring deposits.
- Tell the bank about the death and ask for its current deceased-claim form and checklist.
- Establish the claimant route: nominee, surviving joint holder or another legal claimant.
- Submit the route-specific documents and keep the bank's acknowledgement or reference number.
- Ask how each account, standing instruction, locker or linked service will be handled.
Accounts, deposits and lockers are not one process
A savings or current account, an FD or RD, and a safe-deposit locker can require different forms and outcomes. A nominee also does not automatically become the beneficial owner of everything: succession questions can remain between the people entitled to the estate. If there is a dispute, a will or uncertainty about succession, get legal advice.
